Deals of the week: Ugly cars mean beautiful bargains

Almost no one wants to date a homely car. Or to put it another way, ugly cars don’t sell. That’s the brutal, common-sense truth revealed in the 2012 Avoider Study from J.D. Power and Associates.

Of course J.D. Power stated the obvious in a much gentler way. Power kindly noted that exterior styling remained the top reason why buyers avoid purchasing a particular vehicle.

So it’s the sheet metal, stupid. Good looks in the car-selling game have much to say about success or failure.

The Power study, in fact, found that an ugly design is a greater turn-off than:

a) a high purchase price;
b) poor reliability;
c) a lousy interior; and
d) negative ratings and reviews

Apparently we’re more willing to put up with an overpriced, unreliable clunker than endure living with a merely unattractive car.

With the latest “avoider” research in hand, Deals of the Week went scurrying for bargains on what we might call – ah, hem, cough, cough – less than lovely rides. And there it was: the 2012 Chevrolet Impala.

The Impala is not an ugly car. It’s merely the Rick Santorum of mainstream sedans – Santorum being the former U.S. Senator seeking the Republican nomination, he of the bland looks and a love for snug sweater vests and lectures about “family values.”

So the deal: with the Impala, GM Canada has as much as $4,000 in cash discounts on the table, perhaps more, and that money can be combined with whatever dealer discount you’re able to negotiate.

Deal two: the Nissan Sentra. Again, like the Impala, the Sentra is not what anyone sensible person would call “ugly,” but we’ve heard Nissan dealers talk about the Sentra’s looks in, shall we say, less than enthusiastic terms.

Not surprisingly the Sentra has a $2,500 rebate in play for cash purchases. That’s a fair sum on an affordable and completely reliable compact sedan.

Meantime, the Avoider study found that fuel economy was the most influential reason why buyers actually pulled the trigger on a new vehicle purchase – more important than reliability, the deal and exterior styling. The latter three factors had been considered the most important in the previous Avoider study.

In the latest study, the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius captured the most attention from new-vehicle buyers. Interestingly, aside from excellent fuel economy, reliability was cited as a key driver to influence consumer interest in the Prius hybrid.

Sure enough, if you can find a 2011 Prius, Toyota Canada has a $3,000 cash-to-consumer rebate on offer. This deal can be combined with 3.9 per cent financing for up to five years.

And the Volt? In the Avoider study, Volt buyers cited the image the model portrayed as the most prominent reason for purchase, not the deal. But is there money on offer on the $41,545 Volt?

Yes, the Ontario Government has $8,230 for you and the Quebec Government has $7,769. In addition, GM Canada has a $500 Auto Show Bonus available, though in reality it might be worth only $250 because a $250 Dealer Participation Fee is involved in exercising the bonus.

Evans deals with distractions before big fight

CHICAGO – He’s in the middle of a divorce, his brother is about to be sent off to war in Afghanistan and attention from his fight was taken away first by extraordinary interest in the co-main event and then by a group of hackers who exposed Dana White’s personal information on the Internet.

It can’t be easy for Rashad Evans, the former light heavyweight champion who faces unbeaten Phil Davis on Saturday at the sold-out United Center in the main event of UFC on Fox 2.

Evans tried to get a little banter going with Davis in an attempt to draw attention to their bout, which is quickly feeling more like the No. 2 match rather than the headliner, but it largely fell flat. Noting at the final pre-fight news conference that the unbeaten Davis looked like an offspring of entertainer Arsenio Hall and ex-NBA player John Salley elicited a few chuckles, but Evans wasn’t winning the war of words on this day.

Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen, who faces Michael Bisping in the co-main event stole the show early, carrying a UFC belt with him to the news conference at the W Hotel and cracking up several hundred fans who showed up to watch the event in person with a steady stream of rhymes and one-liners.

“This was Anderson Silva’s belt,” Sonnen said, referring to the UFC middleweight champion. “I took it from him like a gangster in the night. If he wants it, he knows where to come and get it.”

Later on Thursday, it was White himself who stole the headlines from Evans, his main event star. Following the news conference, White repeatedly told reporters “I’m not afraid of the Internet.” He called out a group of hackers who’d redirected the URL of UFC.com to UGNazi.com on Sunday in order to protest the UFC’s support of SOPA and PIPA.

SOPA and PIPA are bills designed to protect copyright holders’ rights, and which are extraordinarily unpopular among the public. Opponents of the bill are concerned that it may damage the open nature of the Internet and lead to censorship.

White supports the bills, which he conceded are “not perfect,” because the UFC’s pay-per-view stream is pirated so frequently. But he insisted he wasn’t concerned about the hackers and issued a direct challenge.

“Keeping hacking our site,” White said Thursday following the news conference. “Do it again. Do it tonight.”

They did.

White’s bold statement prompted a person on Twitter to announce that the UGNazi would no longer go after UFC.com, but after White himself. He then responded by posting what were purportedly White’s telephone number, address and social security number on the Internet.

That led to White getting into a long back-and-forth with members of the group and its supporters.

It made for a fascinating day, but it didn’t do much to help Evans, who will earn a shot at the UFC light heavyweight title held by his one-time protege and now chief rival, Jon Jones, should he win on Saturday.

Evans, though, seemed to be dealing with it as well as might be expected. Davis, a four-time All-American and national champion at Penn State, taunted Evans about their respective wrestling pedigrees.

Davis suggested Evans might not be fully prepared for the challenge he’s about to encounter.

“He’s not as good as he thinks he is, and I am better than he thinks I am,” Davis said. “He thinks he’s a better wrestler than me? That’s crazy. I would beat him 100 times out of 100. He was something like .500 in wins and losses in wrestling. I was a champion; he just competed.”

When Evans said Davis won a national championship during a down year and claimed that he was the superior wrestler, Davis’ eyes got large and he shouted into the microphone, “Chicago commission, this man is on drugs!”

Evans laughed and conceded that, despite his bluster, he considers Davis a good guy. Evans has been in several legendary feuds in his time in the UFC, particularly with Tito Ortiz and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and the one with Jones seems to be bigger than all of them.

Try as he might to create something the last few days, there seems to be no such heat between Evans and Davis. Though he took a few shots at Davis, Evans grinned and said Davis is “so nice and he smiles all the time, so it’s hard to even look mean at him.”

Davis, though, has the wrestling acumen and the athleticism to hang with Evans and destroy his dream of a title fight match with Jones, which would potentially be one of the most lucrative in UFC history.

Joey Beltran, Davis’ training partner, said Davis is hardly overwhelmed by being in the major spotlight for the first time.

“Rashad would be making a big mistake to be thinking Phil’s not prepared for this, and I am sure he is not,” Beltran said. “Phil is a special guy, and I think you’ll see him be at his best in the biggest moments.”

Evans has always come up big in the big moments. He’s 16-1-1 overall and has four wins against UFC light heavyweight champions in his last six fights.

Because of Davis’ wrestling, his length and his athleticism, he’d present a significant challenge for Evans at any time. But with Evans facing a series of personal issues that have to weigh heavily on his mind, the stakes were raised.

Evans wants nothing more than a match with Jones, whom he once was close with and helped train, to prove his superiority.

He’ll have to overcome a lot to do it, but it’s never wise to count Evans out.

“I was blown away by Rashad [at UFC 133, when he stopped Ortiz],” White said. “He looked incredible. When he fights at that level, he’s a tough guy to beat.”

MEI capitalized on the company’s year-end momentum and secured Miami,
Florida-based Lakewood

Year.

True to form, MEI was well-positioned at the start of 2011 and made
headlines with the February debut of TradeInsight,
its affordable Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) tool to plan, execute and

mid-sized Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) manufacturers gained traction in
2011, further positioning the intuitive and easy-to-use TradeInsight

shift in the marketplace afforded MEI to achieve steady growth,
especially among CPG companies in the natural and organic space.

In addition to its notable new business deals in the food and beverage
industry, MEI was the first TPM solution provider to launch a mobile
trade promotion management application designed for the iPhone and iPad.
MEI kicked off summer 2011 with the debut of TI
Mobile
for TradeInsight. The free app gives
TradeInsight clients 24/7 mobile access to trade promotion data while
traveling or on-the-go. The company then introduced a TradeInsight Alliance
Partner Program
in the fall to further educate and extend
its outreach within the CPG industry.

“2011 was a landmark year for us,” says Lorne Schwartz, CEO of MEI. “We
exceeded industry expectations, signed an unprecedented number of new

growth in 2012 with visionary strategies in place that will move trade
promotion management to the next level for our clients. It’s going to be
a phenomenal year for the company.”

MEI plans to continue its trailblazing efforts into 2012 by extending
the functionality of its TradeInsight application with Trade Promotion
Optimization (TPO) capabilities for an all-inclusive trade promotion
management solution. The company will offer a sneak peek of TradeOptimizer,
as well as future strategies and innovations, during the MEI
2012 User Conference

No Deals for Beermakers After Buying Spree

January 25, 2012, 3:38 PM EST

By Clementine Fletcher

Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) — Global brewers, after spending $195 billion on acquisitions in the last decade, may slow the pace of deals in 2012 as beermakers struggle to maintain profit growth amid rising costs and weaker demand in the U.S. and Europe.

The two biggest companies to emerge from the spree, Budweiser owner Anheuser-Busch InBev NV and SABMiller Plc, are best positioned to profit with a presence spread over Africa, Asia and Latin America, while smaller rivals Carlsberg A/S and Heineken NV may suffer from their higher exposure to Europe.

Brewers will be “just getting through 2012, keeping their heads down, managing price and trying to keep input costs down,” Trevor Stirling, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, said. “It’s going to be tough for everyone, and particularly Carlsberg and Heineken.”

More than $21 billion changed hands for beer assets in 2011, topped by SABMiller’s A$10.5 billion ($11 billion) takeover of Foster’s Group Ltd. That made it the busiest year since 2008, when InBev NV paid $52 billion for Anheuser-Busch Cos. As sales volume growth decelerates and the cost of making beer rises, companies including the integrated AB InBev, Heineken and Carlsberg may focus more on running their own businesses this year than buying others.

Carlsberg shares have dropped 25 percent in Copenhagen in the past year and Amsterdam-based Heineken has dropped 4 percent, compared to gains of 14 percent at SABMiller and 13 percent at AB InBev. Carlsberg said in November that it plans to eliminate as many as 150 jobs across Europe.

Reduced Forecasts

Heineken and Carlsberg both cut their forecasts last year due to tough conditions in Europe and Russia. Grain harvests have also been relatively poor in the area this year, according to Stirling, which could lead to sustained high costs in 2012 weighing on their margins.

The amount of beer sold may rise 3.1 percent from 2012 through 2016, slower than the 4.9 percent increase in the four years ended 2008, according to analysts at Nomura including Ian Shackleton. Commodity costs are higher, including malting barley, a key ingredient in beer, which has risen 65 percent since the futures contract started trading in May 2010.

“It’s unlikely that growth will return to historical high levels of 2005 to 2008,” Nomura wrote in a note. “The cost of business is set to rise.”

Beer Volume

Beer volume and revenue growth may be particularly limited in Europe and the U.S. as brewers compete for sales amid economic turmoil and high unemployment. SABMiller, the first brewer to post results for the three months through December, reported declining volumes in both regions, as every other unit grew. Carl Short, an analyst at SP Capital IQ in London, said “recessionary conditions” may return to Europe this year.

Beermakers may have to rely on internal cost cutting as price increases may be limited. Carlsberg and Heineken may have a “really tough time managing the pricing mechanism,” said Anthony Bucalo, an analyst at Banco Santander.

Carlsberg, which exited or sold sites in Switzerland, Finland, Germany and Norway since 2009, may close more breweries and cut costs, according to Nomura analysts.

AB InBev should deliver $270 million of so-called synergies this fiscal year from the Anheuser-Busch acquisition, and Heineken will give details of a new cost-reduction plan when it reports full-year results Feb. 15.

Trading at Premium

Analysts at Nomura and UBS AG have reduced their outlooks on the beverage industry, which also includes spirits companies. The stocks “already command a significant premium to the market,” according to Nomura’s Shackleton.

Deals including Heineken’s purchase of Fomento Economico Mexicano SAB’s beer unit in 2010 and SAB’s takeover of Foster’s have previously helped brewers diversify into faster-growth regions away from the U.S. and Europe. With Brazil’s Schincariol Participacoes Representacoes also off the market after Japan’s Kirin Holdings Co. swooped in last year, big acquisitions may be tough to find in 2012.

“There are fewer assets out there that move the needle,” said Anthony Bucalo, an analyst at Banco Santander. “We’re going into a period where companies are inward-focused.”

Carlsberg could make small acquisitions in Asia. The Danish brewer’s biggest deal in 2011 was buying 30 percent of China’s Chongqing Brewery Co. for about $31 million.

Any buyer with an eye on Corona brewer Grupo Modelo SAB, Groupe Castel and Turkey’s Anadolu Efes would have to wrangle with family ownership and existing joint ventures.

Expanding outside Europe and the U.S. isn’t necessarily a quick fix for brewers. SABMiller said Jan. 19 that Foster’s pro- forma sales slid 6 percent in the quarter ended Dec. 31, raising concern from some analysts that benefits from the acquisition could be harder to come by.

“Realistically, it’s probably not on anybody’s agenda” in 2012, Bucalo said. “This looks like kind of a low-drama year.”
